SEBI has strengthened its Document Number Verification System (DNVS) to make authentication of physical SEBI communications more robust.
Under the revamped system, the “Subject Matter” of the SEBI communication is now a mandatory field for verification. The system has also been aligned with the Outward Number format generated through SEBI’s E-Office system.
A recipient can verify a SEBI letter, notice or show-cause notice using:
🔹 Outward Number
🔹 Name of the SEBI official issuing the communication
🔹 Date of the letter
🔹 Subject Matter
🔹 Name of the recipient
If the details match SEBI’s records, the system confirms that the communication was issued by SEBI.
⚠️ Important: Verification confirms the issuance/authenticity of the communication — it does not verify the contents of the letter.
For communications issued before September 2026, SEBI has advised recipients to seek confirmation by emailing dnvs@sebi.gov.in.
Why this matters for AIFs and Fund Managers
AIFs and investment managers regularly receive regulatory communications from SEBI. The revamped DNVS provides an additional control for authenticating regulatory correspondence before taking action or recording it in compliance systems.
A practical compliance workflow could include:
Receive SEBI communication → Capture verification details → Authenticate through DNVS → Record verification → Initiate compliance action
SEBI has stated that the Document Number Verification System continues to be available through its website under:
SEBI → Home → Authenticate Document Number Issued by SEBI
